As a certified reflexologist, I see feet just aboutĀ  every day. Some nice looking and functioning well and some that need a lot of TLC. Because I have a geeky brain, I like to know the mechanics about how everything works including feet.

Very few of us appreciate our feet until they start to hurt. I have seen my share of clients coming for reflexology services to find relief from fallen arches, painful bunions, poor circulation, plantar fasciitis and just overworked and tired feet.

Many times the pain can be avoided if they wear proper footwear and not being on their feet for hours. I frown at people who love their pretty little shoes that don’t have foot support. I also see a lot of ill-fitting shoes, and shoes that should have been disposed of a long time ago.

My reflexology colleague, Bill Flocco, of the American Academy of Reflexology in California, has compiled a very long list of interesting facts about feet that none of us think about. Here is the next set of 10.Ā  Lets see how many of them you know.

Your feet from infancy

  • Some babies are born with webbed toes, considered a genetic defect often inherited.
  • Normally, the childā€™s foot grows most rapidly before the teen years.
  • Childrenā€™s feet reach about 90 % of their adult length by 12 years-of-age.
  • Babiesā€™ feet are flat and chubby because they are born with a pad of fat where an arch would normally be in an adultā€™s foot.
  • A child is usually about 2 Ā½ years old before arches begin to show up.

Health problemsĀ  affecting the feet or traced to the feet

  • A misaligned spine, lower backache, headaches, indigestion, and other health issues can be traced to problems with your feet.
  • Plantar warts, blisters, athleteā€™s foot, poor circulation, cold feet, ingrown toenails, and bunions are some of the common foot problems.
  • Corns & calluses are the most common foot problems.
  • Having extra toes is technically known as polydactyly, or polydactylism.

BTW, to help or reduce sweaty foot odor, alternate the shoes you wear every other day is helpful.
