Why is your skin so important? How do keep your skin healthy? Become mindful of your skin?

Your Skin

The skin is the body’s largest organ, made of water, protein, fats, and minerals. Besides holding all your organs within your body, the skin’s primary function is to protect you from invasive germs and regulate body temperature.

The skin has five distinct layers,–stratum basale (the deepest portion of the epidermis), stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneumĀ (the most superficial layer of the epidermis). The top two layers are most often affected by autoimmune skin diseases.Ā

Common skin diseases include eczema, psoriasis, acne, moles, and fungal infections. Many types of autoimmune skin diseases are caused by the immune system attacking healthy skin cells.Ā

Your immune system is a complex network of cells and chemicals that work together to protect the body from infections that can cause allergies, asthma, and autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune disorders happen when your immune system mistakenly attacks your body tissues. With skin diseases-the immune system confuses normal skin tissue with a harmful invader for skin diseases, leading to an attack on healthy skin cells.

Autoimmune skin diseases such as:Ā

  1. Pemphigus – is a disease that causes blisters and sores on the skin or mucous membranes, such as the mouth or the genitals.
  2. Pemphigoid – a rare skin condition that causes large fluid-filled blisters.
  3. Scleroderma – Attacks the tissues connective tissues.
  4. Morphea – painless discolored patches of the skin.
  5. Dermatomyositis – is an inflammatory disease marked causes muscle weakness and skin rash.
  6. Dermatitis – skin irritations and rashes caused by an overactive immune system.Ā
  7. Herpetiformis – anĀ intense, itchy skin comprising clusters of small blisters and bumps.
  8. Vasculitis – inflammation of blood vessel walls; organs with inflamed blood vessels can cause damage and dysfunction.Ā
  9. Sjogren’s Syndrome – causes the immune system confusion and attacks healthy cells instead of invasive pathogens; white blood cells attack glands that make moisture, causing the eyes to dry out and preventing the mouth from creating saliva.

Treatment for autoimmune skin diseases involvesĀ

  • Manage symptoms
  • Slow down the overactivity of the immune system
  • Prevent complications

Since there are so many types of autoimmune skin conditions, each has unique symptoms; you can research a treatment plan and work with your healthcare provider.

How Does Skin Disease Affect People’s Daily Lives?

Chronic skin disease has a devastating effect on a person’s physical and psychological well-being. Skin disease impacts all aspects of life, including school, relationships, professional, social, and leisure activities, and intimate relationships.

Psychological problems associated with skin disease include stress, anxiety, anger, depression, shame, social isolation, low self-esteem, and embarrassment, causing a never-ending cycle of pain and embarrassment.

How Reflexology Can Manage and Soothe Skin Problems

Reflexology has helped to relieve skin discomforts; the most common are eczema, psoriasis, acne, shingles, and dermatitis. By reflexing the 15,000 nerve endings on feet and hands, people notice significant skin changes and pain relief in several Reflexology sessions. By working the nervous system, liver, kidney, blood, and circulation, Reflexology encourages the body to release buildup toxins.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a science and an art. Reflex points on the feet, hands, and ears represent the body in miniature. The nerve pathways in each foot create an electrochemical flow that communicates with the entire nervous system. The principle of reflexology is that reflex points and areas, meridian ways, and chakra regions connect with a specific organ, gland, or body part.Ā

By applying pressure using specific thumb and finger techniques, reflexology works with the peripheral nervous system and encourages the body to relax and heal. Reflexology releases stress while reinforcing the body’s ability to stay healthy and vital. Reflexology is a preventative modality that promotes wellness and homeostasis through relaxation.
