(Marino Center for Integrative Health, MA) In addition to serious rest, good fluid hydration and chicken soup, you could consider one of the following herbal treatments to help with your flu or cold symptoms:

Andrographis alone or in combination with Siberian Ginseng (often called Kan Jang) – may reduce symptom severity and duration in active respiratory infections, if started within 36-48 hours after symptoms develop. Typical amounts of Andrographis leaf preparation are 500 – 3,000 milligrams taken three times daily.

Echinacea – may reduce the length and severity of symptoms. Dose recommendations vary – consider Echinacea Root, 1 gram, three times daily.

Elderberry – may improve symptoms of influenza such as fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, cough, and aches. Take four tablespoons of elderberry extract by mouth daily for three days.

Turmeric – may help treat various viral infections. You can try it as a tea.Ā  Steep 1-1.5 grams of dried tumeric root in 150 milliliters of water for 15 minutes and drink twice daily.

Please Note: Do not try any of the above if you have a known allergy to them.
