Stress started millions of years ago during pre-historic times when our ancestors had to run from predators or risk being eaten. This sudden onset of stress prepares the body as part of the fight or flight response. Under this kind of stress, people receive a sudden burst of energy and endurance is increased as the body pumps out stress hormones. These hormones include, adrenaline, norepinephrine and cortisol. They each have different functions and are produced by the brain and adrenal glands.
Adrenaline is produced by your adrenal glands when you have to make a quick and on the spot decision.
Norepinephrin is pumped out by your brain and adrenals, and causes you to become more aware, increases focus, and gives you a sudden burst of energy. During stressful times, this hormone increases and directs blood flow to the muscles.
Cortisol is produced by your adrenals. This hormone focuses on keeping your body balanced and helps to maintain a low blood pressure as well as maintain fluid equilibrium.
What happens when you are stressed?
• Heart beats faster
• More blood is flowing to the brain
• Muscles increase in size and become tense
• Breathing becomes quickened, bringing more oxygen to the muscles
• Digestion stops (so energy is not being used where it is not needed)
• Strength drastically increases (We have all heard the story where the mother is able to pick up the car in order to save her child, right?)
Although we are no longer chased by predators, the body still faces modern stressors such as aging, health issues, changes within the family, job changes, financial burdens, etc. It takes time for body to revert back into a state of relaxation. All the body’s systems stay on that high alert triggered by stress. Stress has been known to cause many health issues such as cardiovascular issues, depression, high blood pressure as well as digestive problems.
