Walking continuously for 30 minutes or more is best for fat-burning. At a brisk walking pace, you will cover a distance of 1.5 to 2 miles or 2.5 to 3.3 kilometers in 30 minutes. (So walking your dog may not necessary count as a fat-burning walk.)
Walk most days of the week for at least 30 minutes to burn an extra 1000 to 3000 calories per week and to improve your metabolism each day.
- A walking workout of 30 to 60 minutes at 50-70% of your maximum heart rate is recommended for walking for weight loss. Use the Target Heart Rate Calculator to find the right heart rate, which varies by age.

Since developing eczema around my eye during the past year, I have researched the many possibilities as to what can cause the skin irritation. For those who don’t know, there are seven common types of eczema, and this is what I learned –
Atopic dermatitis – Can be caused by certain allergens or hay fever. The skin becomes dry and scaly causing painful, itchy patches that turn into bubbles that eventually break and leak fluid. This condition can be chronic.
Contact dermatitis – Can be caused by allergens or irritants from animals, plants, foods, chemicals in cleaning and personal hygiene products, and fabrics.
For many years I lived with a guarded heart. I did not know how to extend love and compassion to myself. In my fortieth year that began changing. As I grew to love all of who I am, life started changing in beautiful and mysterious ways. My heart softened and I began to see through very different eyes. My commitment to follow this calling grew strong and in the process a divine intelligence came to guide my life. I believe this ever present resource is grace, and is available to us all. For the past twelve years I have been lemming to recognize and accept this gift. Cultivating love and compassion for myself made it possible.
The following steps are uniquely mine. Yours will look different. But I do hope mine give voice to a hunger you may share.
Do you think waiting for what you want will make you happy?
One of the things I noticed about being happy and getting happy is that they are NOT interchangeable. We think by waiting for something—perfect job, perfect marriage, lose that 20 pounds, get that diamond bracelet, whatever—those things or events in our lives are going to make us happy.
One of the important lessons I have learned on my journey that things we accumulate do not give us the lasting “happiness” we are seeking.
Everyone has their definition of what inner peace is. You may describe it as feeling physically, emotionally and spiritually at peace with yourself.
Inner peace is an important tool that helps you to navigate through difficult times. It can be as easy as “letting go” of the unnecessary clutter and chaos of the mind. If you practice a religion of Chinese origin, Taoism, inner peace is living in harmony and finding balance in everything you do.
Because we all live in the world of duality, we must find a balance between our physical and spiritual worlds. Most people live in one or the other world, to find inner peace, we need both worlds to be balanced.
As a Reflexologist, I see many people in my week. I am always looking for signs of health problems. One of the easiest health signs to read is nails. Your nails tell you much about your health status. Common nails problems are –
Yellow nails – Your nails may yellow with age or due to the use of acrylic nails or nail polish. Smoking can also stain nails a yellowish hue. If your nails are thick, crumbly, and yellow, a fungal infection could be to blame. Less often, yellow nails may be related to thyroid disease, diabetes, psoriasis, or respiratory disease (such as chronic bronchitis).
Everyone becomes stuck in an energy rut from time-to-time. We feel sluggish run down, out-of-balance, or feel as though we have lost our mojo. Our routines become ordinary and mundane. Sometimes we blame our family, friends, environment and work for NOT making and keeping us happy; but what if it isn’t any of those things? What if it comes down to how you are living your life? The question you must ask yourself is, “are you living a life that makes you feel happy and authentic?”
We are surrounded by so many external influences that drain us. These impacts can cause insecurities, and questions surface such as, “Am I a good person? Am I a good parent? Am I a good worker? Am I good enough?” Society and mainstream media have conditioned us to compete, (not necessarily in a good way), with others and as well as with ourselves.
It wasn’t until the 1800s that French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur and German physician and pioneering microbiologist Robert Koch discovered some bacteria that could cause fatal and physical deformation diseases such as tuberculosis and smallpox. People started to understand the importance of keeping themselves clean to help prevent such illnesses.
Those discoveries were a keynote in creating a society obsessed with personal hygiene. Each year Americans spend billions of dollars on shampoos, soaps, perfumes, bathroom products, and deodorants to be hygienic! We spend so much time staying physically healthy, that we neglect our ability to be energetically healthy.
I wrote this article in 2015. Many people were moved by the story and I wanted to share it again.
I am the first generation in my family to be born in America. It was a blessing and huge undertaking for my grandfather, my father and my mother to leave their native country to go to live in another land that was totally foreign without knowing anyone, their language, and customs, or how and where to live.
I think about some of the stories my mother has shared with me about my family in China, and how they lived and survived during the Japanese invasion of China from 1937 to 1945. (Also known as the War of Resistance against Japan.) Like many families in China, the only way to escape the Japanese occupation was to run and hide.
