Holistic Therapy, how has it helped me?

Throughout the majority of my youth, I have been sick. As a child I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which later lead to Gravesā€™s disease. The result of having Graves had a very negative impact on my body.

From the ages of ten to around fifteen I was bed ridden. I felt like I had no control over my body as I would gain up to twenty pounds in a week and then suddenly lose it the next. I was constantly battling migraines and drastic weight changes.

Things started to turn around when I turned fifteen. My body stabilized, and I no longer suffered from debilitating migraines or drastic weight changes. I was taking multiple pills in order to control my thyroid and everything seemed fine, or so I thought. Being sick for so long did a number to my mental state. I was constantly afraid of having no control over my body and the fear of having it constantly change started to grow and I developed a case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

I developed a series of habits that I would follow in order to protect myself from these so called ā€œthoughts of changeā€. In my head I believed if I thought the words ā€œI change my faceā€ that my physical features would actually change. So from then on I would spend all day battling my own brain to try and not to think of these words. You can imagine how tiring and strenuous this habit was. Fighting your own mind is a pretty hard thing to do.

As my OCD progressed the habit of constantly working out evolved and I became a ā€œworkout-aholicā€. Each day I had to complete a series of 300 pushups in increments of 50 and at least 800 sit-ups as well as run four miles. If these were not completed then my day would be ruined in my head. For a while this was a good thing, but then came the depression.

Depression is probably one of hardest things to fight mainly because you have to fight yourself in order to get anything accomplished. My OCD started to beat my logic and I would have days where I would become so depressed that all I wanted to do was stay in bed. As you know, being a teenager, nothing good came out of this. I stopped working out and my social life started going down the drain.

I canā€™t tell you the number of countless therapists I saw. I was actually labeled schizophrenic by one and I started getting frustrated with the sessions. I even lashed out at one when I became so fed up with his methods of treatment that consisted of meeting me for about two minutes tops and then raising the dosage of my Prozac. Prozac, by the way, if it helps you, then more power to you, but for me Iā€™d rather be able to feel feelings than to become a robot and feel nothing.

As this cycle continued I started looking for alternative methods of healing myself. One of these methods included alternative therapy that used herbs and vitamins in order to balance a person out. This didnā€™t last too long because I was already sick of tossing back pills. I needed to find a method to help calm myself down naturally without the use of medicine or other substances.

At the age of eighteen I stumbled across holistic therapy with Helen Chin Lui. I was not familiar with Reiki or Reflexology at the time and she explained them to me which I found fascinating. Using the energy from the universe to heal a person and pressing on various pressure points on the feet in order to stimulate the body to release tension sounded pretty crazy to me! I mean, what did I have to lose now anyways besides my sanity? So, I gave it a shot.

The first thing I remember when Helen put her hands on my head was the crazy amount of heat emanating from her hands. It was as if she had a small space heater embedded in her palms and she was using them to calm my fears and OCD.Ā  For the first time that I could remember I was actually relaxed and calm. I didnā€™t feel any internal battles trying to emerge or thoughts of change. I was what you could say and utterly relaxed.

After the session I was speechless. All the therapists I had seen had no effect on me as this had. I was truly impressed. I still continue to see Helen and she instills calmness into my life using her holistic abilities.
