What is Muscle Testing? Is that just hocus pocus? Often as a holistic practitioner, I am asked these questions in my line of work in Alternative Medicine, Holistic Medicine, and Energy Medicine. Here I offer answers based on my knowledge and experience.

Muscle Testing, or formally, Applied Kinesiology, is something I perform daily. Historically, it is a technique developed by Dr. Goodhart, a chiropractor, during the 1960ā€™s. Today is it used globally by millions of professionals. Applied Kinesiology has various names: Total Body Modification (TBM), Neuro Emotional Technique (NET), Applied Psycho Neurobiology (APN), Autonomic Response Testing (ART), Applied Psycho-NeurobiologyPsycho (APN), and Touch for Health. I simplify its name and call it Muscle Testing.

The basis of Kinesiology is that the body is like an electrical piece of equipment, which is controlled by an incredibly complex computer, namely the brain. The brain continuously communicates with each of the 639 muscles in the body.

If a muscle is electrically in balance, it is possible to measure a constant electrical signal from the brain to that muscle and back again, much the same as two faxes ‘talking’ to each other. However, when the body is overstressed (through a chemical, emotional, structural or electrical cause), the electrical signals in one or more muscles go weak. It is like a fuse in your fuse box blowing. The body figures that it is better to blow a fuse than the whole thing.

I use muscle testing as a noninvasive way of evaluating the bodyā€™s imbalances and assessing its needs. It involves testing the bodyā€™s responses when applying slight pressure to a large muscle, to provide information on energy blockages, the functioning of the organs, nutritional deficiencies, and food sensitivities, among other things. It can also be used to test the bodyā€™s responses to herbs and other remedies.

There is nothing magical about muscle testing. Itā€™s important for me to educate clients about how and why it works. I was introduced to muscle testing through a Naturopath Doctor in 2006 when my then one-year-old son was facing possible surgery. He muscle tested my child and advised me as to what herbs would fix his digestive issues. In comparison, the hospital offered no other remedy but surgery. I took the Naturopathā€™s advice and my son recovered.

This led to my mission to get trained in various holistic techniques to help people when traditional medicine fails them. It is called holistic medicine because I treat the ā€œwholeā€ person, never just a symptom. The root of my help stems from my heart, not my pockets. My goal is to help hundreds, perhaps to reach millions if that is what I am led to do. I challenge those who donā€™t understand holistic techniques to open yourself up to knowledge that can bring your health into the light.
