Reflexology Palliative and Cancer Care
We will all eventually face the end of life. No one is exempt from this club. Wouldn’t it be ideal if we pass away peacefully in our sleep and in our beds?
For those people undergoing aggressive treatment for cancer, many times, there is no peaceful way of passing. Cancer touches everyone, including me. Currently, my 90-year-old mother is in hospice care and is in the stage of dying, but not in the active dying process as of yet. Once she has stop drinking and eating, death isn’t that far off. She has cancer, and it is growing in all the nooks in her body.
She has chosen not to undergo surgery, nor will doctors take the chance of having a 90-year-old person not surviving the surgery. She also decided not to resuscitate when the time comes.
Painful Cancer Experience
It is one of the hardest experiences in my life. Watching her in severe pain and dizziness every day is horrified. We treat animals better at the end of their lives than human beings.
Pain controlled by medication works sometimes, and sometimes not. For anyone who is under cancer care, medicine is a tricky thing. One day a medication works, and then another day, it does not. Regardless, it is painful to wait for the end to come for the sufferer and family members.
Reflexology Palliative and Cancer Care
To help ease the pain and relax the body of cancer patients, I enrolled in a two-day, Reflexology Palliative and Cancer Care course. The course was wonderful and I learned much. It was also wonderful to share a day with other certified reflexologists who all have a passion to help. I learned:
- Hands-on reflexology practice to ease anxiety and pain of cancer patients
- How to support cancer patients and caregivers
- Self-care techniques.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is the ancient art of healing. It can be used in conjunction with conventional treatment to obtain relief from a variety of conditions – from general stress to specific disorders. This gentle and non-invasive healing art originated in Chinese and Egyptian medicine 5,000 years ago.
Why Does Reflexology Work?
There are more 15,000 nerve endings in the feet connected to every organ and body system. To increase energy flow, release toxins, and support body systems, a trained, certified Reflexologist uses their thumbs and fingers to stimulate 15,000 nerve endings and bring the body back to homeostasis.
My Mother
I was able to apply the reflexology techniques learned from this course on my mother. She enjoyed it. Instead of being agitated from the pain, she was able to fall into a deep and restful sleep. Just what she needs.
What I learned from the course is helpful!
