Back in the day when I was completely exhausted all the time, I set out on a desperate search for more energy. For many reasons, one of the avenues I chose was a vegetarian diet.

For the first three weeks without meat, I felt incredible. I had finally figured out what was wrong with me ā€“ or so I thought. My low energy crept back into my life like that ex-boyfriend who just can’t get over you.

I decided to take it a step further and after about a year, eliminating dairy and eggs. This lasted another two years. I felt okay but soon enough, a myriad of new health issues started to arise. I just couldn’t win.

Before I made the decision to go back to school for Holistic Nutrition, I sat in on an open house day where I was lectured by someone who would soon become my most educational teacher. He discussed the nutritive value of animal foods. His words really got me thinking. So much so that I slowly started opening up to animal foods again.

Itā€™s now been almost two years since I’ve ventured back onto the meat train, and I’ve been loving it! The whole process was quite a big learning lesson for me on many levels. Who knew that organic, grassfed-beef could be so inspiring?

Here are the 10 lessons I learned from eating meat again:

1. There is a kind, ethical, and healthful way to enjoy eating meat. Go visit the farms and get to know your vendors.

2. If you find yourself craving meat, it could be a sign of what your inner goods are needing nutrition wise.

3. I was being way too hard on myself. I made an educated and intuitive decision in honor of my health.

4. What’s best for our body is always changing. Daily, weekly, yearly.

5. Itā€™s important to grow with your body as its needs change.

6. I really like meat and that’s okay.

7. Just because you eat meat, doesnā€™t mean you canā€™t eat fully vegan/vegetarian for a day or three throughout the week.

8. If you chose to eat meat, itā€™s important to check in with your digestion to make sure itā€™s working effectively. Supplementing with Betaine HCl or enzymes could be helpful for certain people (always consult with your Holistic Health Practitioner first).

9. A meat-heavy meal is best balanced with plenty of veggies. I usually opt for a base of simple, raw greens. You get the best of both worlds that way.

10. The only way youā€™ll know what works for you is by trying. Nothing is forever, especially not our dietary choices. Don’t be afraid to change your mind when it’s in your healthā€™s best interest.
