Back in the day when I was completely exhausted all the time, I set out on a desperate search for more energy. For many reasons, one of the avenues I chose was a vegetarian diet.

For the first three weeks without meat, I felt incredible. I had finally figured out what was wrong with me – or so I thought. My low energy crept back into my life like that ex-boyfriend who just can’t get over you.

I decided to take it a step further and after about a year, eliminating dairy and eggs. This lasted another two years. I felt okay but soon enough, a myriad of new health issues started to arise. I just couldn’t win.

Before I made the decision to go back to school for Holistic Nutrition, I sat in on an open house day where I was lectured by someone who would soon become my most educational teacher. He discussed the nutritive value of animal foods. His words really got me thinking. So much so that I slowly started opening up to animal foods again.

It’s now been almost two years since I’ve ventured back onto the meat train, and I’ve been loving it! The whole process was quite a big learning lesson for me on many levels. Who knew that organic, grassfed-beef could be so inspiring?

Here are the 10 lessons I learned from eating meat again:

1. There is a kind, ethical, and healthful way to enjoy eating meat. Go visit the farms and get to know your vendors.

2. If you find yourself craving meat, it could be a sign of what your inner goods are needing nutrition wise.

3. I was being way too hard on myself. I made an educated and intuitive decision in honor of my health.

4. What’s best for our body is always changing. Daily, weekly, yearly.

5. It’s important to grow with your body as its needs change.

6. I really like meat and that’s okay.

7. Just because you eat meat, doesn’t mean you can’t eat fully vegan/vegetarian for a day or three throughout the week.

8. If you chose to eat meat, it’s important to check in with your digestion to make sure it’s working effectively. Supplementing with Betaine HCl or enzymes could be helpful for certain people (always consult with your Holistic Health Practitioner first).

9. A meat-heavy meal is best balanced with plenty of veggies. I usually opt for a base of simple, raw greens. You get the best of both worlds that way.

10. The only way you’ll know what works for you is by trying. Nothing is forever, especially not our dietary choices. Don’t be afraid to change your mind when it’s in your health’s best interest.
