Heartburn and Acid Reflux Relief with Hand Reflexology
Heartburn, despite the name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It is a digestive problem that occurs when stomach acid comes into contact with the lining of the esophagus. The acid content of the stomach passes backward up into the food pipe, also known as the gullet or esophagus. This irritation is known as acid reflux.
Most people have experienced stomach acid reflux at some point in their lives, either as heartburn or acid regurgitation. Heartburn is annoying and may have a detrimental effect on a person’s well being. Sometimes, heartburn tends to develop into a mucous membrane inflammation in the food pipe, known as esophagitis.
In the worst cases, esophagitis can become complicated with ulcers, which, in rare cases, may bleed or cause chronic anemia. Occasionally, scars from reflux esophagitis cause a tightening or narrowing (stricture) in the food pipe, making swallowing difficult. If this should occur, it is a severe condition that requires immediate attention.
What Causes Heartburn?
When the lower esophageal sphincter valve keeps stomach acid in the stomach weakened or relaxed, it can cause gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Foods that can weaken or relax the LES include:
ā¢ Certain foods (chocolate, fried and fatty foods, peppermint, coffee, alcohol, and sugars).
ā¢ Eating large meals or eating before bedtime.
ā¢ Pressure on the stomach, including frequent bending over, tight clothes, lifting, and obesity.
How Often do You Get Heartburn?
- Once a month is considered mild, and about 20% of all adults experience monthly symptoms.
- Weekly symptoms of heartburn are considered moderate.
- When heartburn occurs daily, it is severe.
Remedy Options
- You can manage uncomfortable episodes by changing your diet from acidic to alkaline foods.
- Evaluating over-the-counter medications
- Losing weight can decrease acid
Only 5-15% of severe heartburn sufferers will find partial or temporary relief with these remedies.
