Reflexology and Celiac Support
At the Healing Place LLC in Medfield, MA we see many clients with various seasonal, environmental, and food-related allergies. One client mentioned that her friend had a celiac flare-up after using a nasal spray containing gluten. I knew gluten was hidden in many processed foods but medicine too?
What is Celiac?
Celiac disease is a serious genetic autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine’s villi and interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. Celiac disease is triggered by consuming the protein called gluten, naturally found in wheat, barley, and rye.
Approximately 3 million Americans have celiac disease; consuming gluten can trigger an immune response that causes damage to the intestinal villi, which are finger-like projects that line the entire small intestine and aid in nutrient absorption. Over time, gluten damage can lead to malabsorption of nutrients, leading to serious conditions such as anemia, osteoporosis, diabetes, thyroid disease, and intestinal cancers.
Gluten in Medication
People with celiac disease must work with their doctor or pharmacist to ensure their medications are gluten-free. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates gluten-free claims on packaged foods and supplements. As of 2014, manufacturers are required to list common allergens on their labels. Unfortunately, there are no laws for labeling gluten in medications. Gluten is a binder that holds medicine together.
Representative Tim Ryan [D-OH] introduced HR 2435, the Gluten in Medicine Disclosure Act of 2021, to the House of Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health. If passed, the bill would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to prohibit the sale of medication intended for human use that contains ingredients derived from gluten-contain grain and identifies the type of grain from which the component is derived.
The Problems with Gluten in Medication
- There are currently no requirements for labeling gluten or common allergens found in drug ingredients
- There are no specific precautions for individuals with celiac disease in labeling
- Potential sources of gluten in medications are not well-recognized by healthcare professionals
- Generic drugs may use different binders than name-brand drugs

Inactive Starches Found in Medications Can Cause Digestive Flare Ups
More information about inactive ingredients sourced from wheat, barley, or rye is needed to determine if they contain gluten, such as:
- Wheat
- Modified starch (if the source is not specified)
- Pregelatinized starch (if the source is not specified)
- Pregelatinized modified starch (if the source is not specified)
- Dextrose (if the source is not specified)
- Dextrin (if the source is not identified; the source is usually corn or potato, which is acceptable)
- Dextrimaltose (when barley malt is used)
- Caramel coloring (when barley malt is used)
Working with a Medical Team
People with celiac disease must work with their doctor or pharmacist to ensure their medications are gluten-free. The manufacturer should also be able to help you determine if the medication you will be taking is gluten-free or unsafe for people with celiac disease.
Effective Celiac Treatment
The only effective treatment for celiac disease is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet and questioned medications ingredients. Individuals with celiac disease can manage their symptoms by eliminating gluten from their diet, promoting intestinal healing, and reducing the risk of long-term complications.
Manage Digestive Problems with Foot Reflexology
Reflexology is an alternative therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears to promote relaxation and improve overall health and well-being. Foot reflexology can help improve digestive function in the following ways:
- Stimulation of reflex points: Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific reflex points on the feet, hands, or ears, which correspond to different organs and systems in the body. Focusing on the digestive reflex points helps to improve digestion.
- Relaxation: Reflexology promotes relaxation, reducing stress and tension in the body. Chronic stress can impair digestion by activating the “fight or flight” response, diverting blood flow from the digestive system and slowing down digestive enzyme production.
- Improves circulation: Reflexology improves circulation by increasing blood flow to the digestive organs by enhancing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to promote healthy digestion.
