Each one of us goes through “darkness” at some point in our lives. We lose our direction and our compasses. We lose our connection to God/to the universe/to our inner source. How we lose our direction comes from certain situations, sometimes out of our control, and sometimes not, such as losing a job, losing a loved one either through death, or growing apart in a different direction. We feel that there is a piece of us that is missing or empty and the darkness grows within us. There is an emptiness that we can’t fill and sometimes cannot overcome. No matter what we do, the darkness grows like a disease.

These painful lessons we experience from time to time are part of our life lessons. Can we learn from our pains and incorporate the lessons into our being? YES we can! Believe me, the darkness wants to win at all cost. It takes tremendous courage to break away from your inner darkness and find our way back to the light.

I have experienced many dark moments throughout my life, especially when I have an energy shift where the universe challenges me to “step up” and go outside of my “comfort zone.” What are the symptoms? You don’t feel good about yourself, or about what you just did or what you said. You treat yourself or others with disrespect, unkindness and thoughtlessness. One of the steps to fighting your darkness is to come back to consciousness. Be mindful with your thoughts. Understand where they are coming from. Reach in and also reach out to others. Connect to God/universe/or whatever you believe in.Ā  Connect to your inner strength. You CAN overcome your darkness. Be the light that you have been created to be.Ā  This is your birthright. No one can extinguish your light unless you decide to put it out.

Be proactive with yourself today. Do something to break through your darkness. Go out and be with nature. Help a stranger. Do some volunteer work in your community.Ā  Connect with yourself through meditation or mindful exercise, like Tai Chi.Ā  If your living or work space is cluttered with unnecessary things, get rid of things you no longer use. You will notice that the dark and dense energy will be replaced by lightness.
Treat your body and mind with the respect that it deserves. Your light will reignite again.

I’ve included one of my favorite poems “As I Began to Love Myself” by Charlie Chapin. I post this poem at the beginning of every new year to remind you not only how special you are to others, but how special you are to yourself.

For those who do not know who Charlie Chaplin is, Sir Charles Spencer ā€œCharlieā€ Chaplin,Ā  (April 16, 1889 ā€“Ā  December 25, 1977) was an English comic actor, film director and composer best known for his work in the United States during the silent film era. He became the most famous film star in the world before the end of World War I. Chaplin used mime, slapstick and other visual comedy routines, and continued well into the era of the talkies in 1920ā€²s.

Sir Chaplin shares some of his profound, personal reflections in this poem that he wrote on his 70th birthday on April 16, 1959.Ā  Let this poem speak to you. Take the time to read it and appreciate who you are, what you have accomplished, where you have been, and where you are going. Unfortunately, the journey is unmarked and there are no road maps. Let your soul guide you on this unpredictable journey. You will be surprised with the outcomes.

As I Began To Love Myself

As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth. Today, I know, this is ā€œAUTHENTICITYā€.

As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody if I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it ā€œRESPECTā€.

As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it ā€œMATURITYā€.

As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm. Today I call it ā€œSELF-CONFIDENCEā€.

As I began to love myself I quit stealing my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm. Today I call it ā€œSIMPLICITYā€.

As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health ā€“ food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism. Today I know it is ā€œLOVE OF ONESELFā€.

As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since I was wrong less of the time. Today I discovered that is ā€œMODESTYā€.

As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worrying about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where everything is happening. Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it ā€œFULFILLMENTā€.

As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this connection ā€œWISDOM OF THE HEARTā€.

We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born. Today I know ā€œTHAT IS LIFEā€!

So be the light that you were born with. Burn bright. Stay on your path. When you get lost, use your inner compass or ask whoever you believe in to help you through your trying times. Help is just a request away.
