Colic, respiratory, and digestive problems are relatively common in babies. Colic is characterized by excessive crying and fussiness in infants; approximately 25% of babies experience colic in their first few months. You can help your baby find colic relief with foot reflexology.

Reasons that may cause colic:

Immune Respiratory system

Newborns may experience respiratory problems for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Immature respiratory system: A baby’s respiratory system not fully developed at birth can take several weeks for the lungs to mature and become fully functional. Immature lungs are more susceptible to respiratory problems, such as respiratory distress syndrome, which can make it difficult for them to breathe.
  2. Delivery complications: Complications during delivery, such as prolonged or difficult labor, can increase the risk of respiratory problems in newborns.Ā
  3. Premature birth: Premature babies born before 37 weeks of gestation are more likely to experience respiratory problems because their lungs are not fully developed.
  4. Infections: Newborns are also more susceptible to infections, which can cause respiratory problems such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or bronchiolitis.

Immune Digestive System

Digestive problems, such as reflux, constipation, and diarrhea, are also relatively common in infants. For example, infant reflux affects up to 50% of babies in their first few months of life, while constipation can affect up to 30% of infants.

Newborns may experience digestive problems for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Immature digestive system: Like the respiratory system, a baby’s digestive system is not fully developed at birth. The digestive system needs time to mature and function properly. In some cases, the digestive system of newborns may not be able to break down food effectively, leading to digestive problems such as gas, bloating, and discomfort.
  2. Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding newborns is typical, but it can also contribute to digestive problems in some infants. Breast milk is easily digestible but can contain proteins that can be difficult for some infants to break down, leading to colic or digestive discomfort.
  3. Formula feeding: Formula-fed Infants may also experience digestive problems due to the composition of the formula. Some babies may be allergic or intolerant to certain ingredients in the formula, which can cause digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhea, or colic.
  4. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER): GER is a common digestive problem in newborns where the stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and regurgitation due to an immature digestive system or a weak or underdeveloped sphincter muscle at the base of the esophagus.

Reflexology Helps to Relieve Colic, Respiratory, and Digestive Newborn Discomforts

Reflexology is an alternative therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet or hands that correspond to different organs and systems in the body. Reflexology can help relieve the baby’s digestive, respiratory, and nervous system discomfort while promoting relaxation.Ā

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a science and an art. Reflex points on the feet, hands, and ears represent the body in miniature. The nerve pathways in each foot create an electrochemical flow that communicates with the entire nervous system. The principle of reflexology is that reflex points and areas, meridian pathways, and chakra regions connect with a specific organ, gland, or body part. Through applying pressure using specific thumb and finger techniques, reflexology works with the peripheral nervous system and encourages the body to relax. Reflexology promotes the reduction of stress, reinforcing the body’s ability to stay healthy and vital. This preventative modality encourages wellness through empowerment, education, relaxation, and homeostasis.

Disclaimer: It’s important to note that a healthcare professional should evaluate any signs of respiratory or digestive problems in a newborn to ensure the baby receives appropriate care. Reflexology does not replace traditional health care. If you have questions about Reflexology, talk to your healthcare provider or email us your Reflexology questions at [email protected].
