First Father’s Day celebration occurred on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official.

Father’s Day was established in the early 20th century by Sonora Smart Dodd, from Spokane, Washington. Sonora’s dad, William Jackson Smart raised her and her five siblings single-handedly after his wife, Ellen Victoria Cheek Smart passed away during childbirth when Sonora was 16 years old. Sonora, born in 1882, was the only daughter and raised five younger brothers, including a baby, with her father. Inspired by her father’s love and devotion, Sonora proposed the idea of a special day to honor fathers.

The first Father’s Day to be celebrated was on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Two years earlier, Mother’s Day was first observed. The observance of Father’s Day faded in the 1920s, but over time, Father’s Day became popular once again and embraced across the nation. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. However, it was not until 1972 that President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held annually on the third Sunday of June.

Father’s Day is dedicated to honoring and appreciating fathers’ and father figures’ love, guidance, and contributions to our personal growth and well-being. Father’s Day allows us to express gratitude and show our deep appreciation for the sacrifices, support, and unconditional love that fathers provide. We acknowledge dads’ critical role and impact on their children’s lives. We value fathers’ wisdom and lessons while shaping our character and helping us navigate life’s challenges.

Father’s Day goes beyond biological fathers; it also encompasses stepfathers, adoptive fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other male role models who assume the role of a father figure. Father’s Day acknowledges the diverse ways these individuals contribute to our growth, providing guidance, mentorship, and support.

Moreover, Father’s Day allows families to celebrate the bond between fathers and their children by spending quality time together, expressing love and appreciation through heartfelt words, giving gifts, or engaging in activities. Father’s Day reminds us to cherish the moments and create lasting memories with our dads while expressing gratitude, strengthening familial bonds, and celebrating their essential roles.

To dads everywhere, Happy Father’s Day.
