In 2006, the United States started to see a new holistic revival.Ā  Consumers began to seek new and alternative ways of healing the body, mind, and soul. Following our European counterparts (where the trend was 50% accelerated in comparison to the US), more people were trying various alternative healing modalities such as Reflexology, Reiki, Massage, Acupuncture, and Homeopathic and Naturopathic medicines.

In 2016, it has been reported that 40% of adults use Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). More people want to establish long-term healthy lifestyles that include clean eating, clean products, moving the body and challenging the mind, and having a balance that includes mindfulness, relaxation, and self-care.

As the general population seeks a holistic lifestyle, traditional medical fields are listening and becoming a part of the trend by including alternative practices at their offices and hospitals or referring patients to holistic practitioners.Ā  Even if a health service provider canā€™t recommend a specific treatment or practitioners, he or she can help you understand the possible risks and benefits before you try a treatment, especially if you are pregnant, have a medical problem or take prescription medicine.

A traditional medical facility such as Dana Faber Hospital in Boston has embarked on its largest expansion to include free alternative therapy services like Reflexology, Reiki, and Acupuncture to adults and children in their outpatient infusion clinics during chemotherapy treatments. These treatments have been especially helpful to ease stress and reduce fatigue and nausea in cancer patients.

Reflexology can be a good choice for patients who donā€™t want or canā€™t have most of their body touched or canā€™t be moved during a treatment. Reflexology can be done on the feet, hands and ears, where no undressing or repositioning is required like in massage.

Another traditional medical facility, Brigham and Womenā€™s Hospital, believe that good health is not just about medicine. Itā€™s about embracing a healthy spiritual, emotional and physical lifestyle. Ā As part of its wellness program, the hospital has been awarded grant money to offer complementary therapies of Reflexology, Reiki, Chair Massage sessions to help nurses to reduce stress and improve focus.

Where wellness was once considered a choice or a lifestyle, the trend is to make wellness mandatory. There are companies now offering incentives to stay healthy; these companies offer cash rewards if monthly personal wellness goals are met, like walking or running.

As the wellness trend grows, CAM services like Reflexology, Reiki, and Energy Healing will be covered by insurance companies. Services will be widely used and affordable.
