What is meditation?

Remember that meditation is a practice, and it may take some time to quiet your mind. Be patient with yourself, and try to approach your meditation with a sense of curiosity and openness. Regular meditation will make your mind and body more peaceful and allow for a deeper sleep.

Basic Meditation Guidelines for Deep Relaxation

  1. Find a comfortable and quiet place to sit or lie down. You can sit cross-legged on the floor, in a chair, or lie on a bed or mat.
  2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath through your nose, filling up your lungs. Hold your breath for a few seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth, releasing all the air from your lungs and releasing it into your outer energy field, the aura.
  3. Bring your attention to your breath. Notice the sensation of the air flowing in and out of your nostrils. Focus on the rise and fall of your chest and abdomen with each inhale and exhale.
  4. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your attention back to your breath. It is helpful to silently count each inhale and exhale of a count of 5.
  5. As you focus on your breath, allow any thoughts or feelings that come up to pass without judgment. Acknowledge them, and then let them go, returning your attention to your breath.
  6. If you notice any tension in your body, consciously release it on each exhale. You can visualize the tension leaving your body as you exhale.
  7. If your mind is still racing, try visualizing a peaceful scene, such as a beach or a forest. Imagine yourself there, and focus on the sights, sounds, and sensations you would experience in that setting.
  8. Continue to meditate quietly for 10 minutes or as long as you like. When you are ready to end the meditation, take a few deep breaths and slowly open your eyes.
