Kidneys Work 24-7

Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a fist. They are located below the rib cage, one on each spine side. Your left kidney is slightly bigger than the right kidney and sits slightly higher.

Healthy kidneys filter about a half cup of blood every minute, removing wastes and extra water to make urine. Urine flows from the kidneys to the bladder through two thin tubes called ureters that is attached to each kidney. Bladder stores urine until it exits through the urethra.Ā

Chronic Kidney Disease and You

CKD is when the kidneys are damaged and lose their ability to function correctly. In the early stages of the CKD, most people do not have symptoms. But as kidney disease worsens, wastes build up in your blood and make you feel sick. You may develop health problems like high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones, poor nutritional health, and nerve damage.

Five Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease

CKD stage 1, with an eGFR 90 or greater. Stage 1 is the earliest of CKD and tests for abnormal kidney urine or kidney imaging. CKD is very manageable at this level.Ā

CKD Stage 2, with an eGFR between 60 and 89 – this stage may be consistent with normal aging, whereas the kidney loses some function as we age. Most likely, there will be abnormal kidney blood tests, kidney urine tests, and kidney imaging.Ā

CKD stage 3a, with an eGFR between 45 and 59: This is a moderate decrease in kidney functions with abnormal kidney blood tests, abnormal kidney urine, and kidney imaging. Patients are referred to a kidney specialist or Nephrologist. A Nephrologist works with patients to slow the progression of kidney disease with medication.Ā

CKD Stage 3b, with an eGFR between 30 to 44 – Less kidney function than stage 3a with more emphasis on slowing the progression of kidney disease.Ā

CKD stage 4, with an eGFR between 15 and 29 – This is an advanced stage of kidney disease. The Nephrologist educates patients on dialysis options, including dialysis at home and kidney transplants.

CKD Stage 5, with eGFR less than 15 – This is the most advanced stage of kidney disease. The Nephrologist works with the patient in transitioning from progressive kidney disease to kidney failure and what course of action if a transplant is not done before kidney failure.Ā

With CKD, loss of kidney function happens gradually and cannot be reversed. Learning to check your kidney numbers on your lab work is essential.Ā Kidney Function numbers come from 2 tests, eGFR and UACR. BYĀ diagnosing CKD early, action steps can be taken to slow disease progression and preserve kidney function.Ā
