Bowel movement frequency varies from person to person. You may boast about having a bowel movement after every meal, but sometimes, you don’t feel completely empty.

What is an Incomplete Bowel Movement?

An incomplete bowel movement is a feeling of wanting to empty your bowels, but you may strain to get your bowels to move, and you can’t pass much or any stool; this may cause constipation.Ā

What causes Incomplete Bowel Movements

Incomplete bowel movements can be caused by various factors, including:

  1. Constipation: One of the most common causes of incomplete bowel movements is constipation. Constipation occurs when the stool moves too slowly through the digestive tract, leading to hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass completely.
  2. Dietary Factors: A diet low in fiber and fluids can contribute to constipation and incomplete bowel movements. Fiber helps add bulk to stools, making them easier to pass, while fluids help keep stools soft and easier to evacuate.
  3. Lifestyle Factors: Lack of physical activity or exercise can slow the digestive system and contribute to constipation. Regular physical activity can help stimulate bowel movements and promote healthy digestion.
  4. Medications: Certain medications, such as opioids, some antidepressants, antacids containing calcium or aluminum, and some antispasmodic medications, can cause constipation and contribute to incomplete bowel movements.
  5. Medical Conditions: Various medical conditions can lead to incomplete bowel movements, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hemorrhoids, pelvic floor dysfunction, and neurological disorders.
  6. Ignoring the Urge to Defecate: Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement can lead to incomplete evacuation. Over time, ignoring the urge can disrupt the normal signals between the brain and the digestive system, making it more difficult to evacuate the bowels fully.
  7. Anxiety or Stress: Stress and anxiety can affect digestive function and contribute to bowel irregularities, including incomplete bowel movements.
  8. Structural Abnormalities: Structural abnormalities in the colon or rectum, such as strictures, tumors, or abnormal anatomy, can obstruct the passage of stool and lead to incomplete evacuation.

Understanding How Your Digestion Works

To have good digestive health, it is crucial to understand how your digestive system works. Digestion starts in the mouth by chewing and ends in the anus canal. What is in between the mouth and the anus canal are the salivary glands, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.

The primary function of digestion is to turn food into the energy we need to work and move. Some of us have learned basic anatomy in school, but chances were good that most of us were half-heartily listening or worse, you were asleep (not good.)

By understanding how your body processes food from mouth to anus, you can proactively promote good digestive health.

What Does Your Digestive Anatomy Look Like?Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Ā

The digestive process is approximately 30 feet long, from the mouth to the anus. It is primarily one long tube with a lot of curves. Here is some anatomy:Ā

The digestive system is the maintenance system of the body. It has four primary functions ā€“

  • Ingestion
  • Digestion
  • Food and Nutrient Absorption
  • Ā EliminationĀ

Ingestion ā€“ Chewing!Ā Digestion starts in the mouth by mixing digestive enzyme-rich saliva with chewed foods for easy digestion. It is best to chew between 20 to 30 chews for food to be masticated into micro bites so that your small intestines can easily absorb food and nutrients.Ā

DigestionĀ ā€“ further food processing occurs in the stomach by chemically breaking down food and getting it ready to be emptied into the small intestines. When food is masticated correctly, food and nutrient absorption will occur quicker and more efficiently in the small intestines.

Ā Food and nutrients Absorption occursĀ in 25 feet of combined small and large intestines. Food is processed into nutrient-sized molecules and then moves through the three parts of the small intestines (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum), where nutrients and water are absorbed through the walls of the small intestines into the bloodstream through an action called peristalsis. Peristalsis is a combined contraction and relaxation of muscles that produce a wave-like action from the small intestines to the large and onto the final destination.

Ā EliminationĀ ā€“ Any non-digested food that the small intestines haven’t absorbed moves through the large intestine and gets ready to be eliminated through the rectum, anal canal, and then the anus.

Imagine Food Piling in Your Intestines

As you eat, imagine food remnants piled on each other in your 25 feet of intestines. The stools you see today may be the processed food you ate three days ago. That means you have three days of waste product stored in your intestines! Yuck! Piled-up waste products are the cause of many digestive problems.Ā

Holistically Empty Your Bowels with Healthy Habits

  • Drink plenty of water. It is suggested to drink half your weight in ounces.
  • Exercise to help push your stomach’s content through the 25-foot conveyor belt in your intestines.Ā
  • Limited processed food and focus on whole foods. Increase your fiber intake. You can increase your fiber. How much? For women under 50, 25-28 grams a day, and over 50, 22 grams per day.Ā Men under 50, 31-34 grams daily, and over 50, 28 grams daily.Ā
