As soon you have an emotion, good, bad or indifferent, does it hit your stomach?

Has your stomach put you on a schedule?

Do you have to plan your activities around when your stomach will less likely to flare up?

It usually starts with childhood. Someone says something unkind to you, a parent, teacher, or friend. The negative feelings land in your stomach. Innocently the pain starts there, which may lead into not wanting to go to school, not wanting to see friends, or not wanting to go to family events.Ā  More times than not, these unkind words can begin the root of insecurities and possible digestive issues.

As adults we think that we are equipped to handle these childhood emotions, but unfortunately most people are not taught as children how to process these emotions or how to effectively handle them where no residual negative emotions remain. Instead most children are taught to ignore unpleasant situations, or ā€œto deal with the situationā€ (whatever that means), told not to do anything that might lead to confrontation.

The most common advice received is ā€œwalk away,ā€ ā€œif you ignore it long enough it will go away,ā€ or ā€œyou will find ways to handle it.ā€ More times than not, emotional bullying begins the seeds to many physical and emotional illnesses.

If we do not learn how to handle these stressful situations as children, we likely donā€™t have the ability of to handle them as adults. Whatā€™s worse, you may end up with a life time of thousands of layers of unresolved emotion stored in your body that are ready to explode at your ā€œbreak the camelā€™s backā€ moment.

What emotions donā€™t get resolved, get stored. You know who you are!Ā  If you are the person who constantly makes reference to past events, go over the same conversations in your head, feel resentful of otherā€™s successes, have regrets, hold grudges, feels like you are not getting your fair share, are envious of others, the list goes onā€¦ just imagine how many layers of negative emotions you have stored!

If we can look inside of ourselves, we can see where these resolved emotions live. It starts with a hurt or a pain. The pain may get stronger and sometimes it spreads like a disease taking over the body. Notice where do you hurt?

Our bodies respond to the ways we feel, think, and act ā€“ some would refer to this as the mind/body connection. What this means is that whatever thoughts or emotions that we have dwelled upon usually become either good or negative energy. All emotions are stored in our bodies regardless if we are aware of it or not.

How does an emotion process in the mind you might wonder? People think that the mind and the brain are interchangeable. But in reality the brain is an organ and the mind lives in the brain. An easy explanation: the brain is the hardware and the mind is the software.

The brain transmits electronic impulses through your body to create thoughts, coordinate movements, and run your internal functions. Your mind on the other hand, has the ability to process millions of pieces of information ā€“ interpreting information, perception, emotions, and memories.

The next time you experience an emotion, notice where you feel that emotion in your body. Instead of ignoring or steam-rolling the feeling, ask yourself what does the emotion feel like to you? Is it positive or negative? If it is negative, why did you experience it that way? Learning how to process emotions is the beginning of living a more conscious and healthy life.

Start to live consciously NOW!
