Your chronic gas and bloating may be caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria. It is a type of bacteria that causes infection, sores, and inflammation in the lining of the stomach and the upper small intestines (duodenum.) H. pylori can also cause gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and stomach cancer. It is the leading cause of peptic ulcers.Ā Try Reflexology to support your immune and digestive systems.
Approximately two-thirds of the world’s population have H. pylori bacteria, but many people don’t know they have it, nor does everyone display symptoms. It is usually passed from person to person through direct contact with saliva, vomit, stool, dirty food, water, or utensils. Once H. pylori enters the body, it multiplies in the stomach lining, causing it to weaken, making it more likely for stomach acids to create ulcers. The most common symptom of H. pylori is a dull or burning pain in the stomach, and the feeling may come and go and worsen when the stomach is empty.
Treating H. Pylori
Treatment for H. pylori infection includes antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and H-2 blockers. Treatment takes about two weeks.Ā Once the bacteria is eradicated, there’s little chance the infection will return if you follow good physical and oral hygiene practices (hand washing, bathing, brushing your teeth, and wearing clean clothes.) Keeping clean can kill and remove illness-causing bacteria from your body, lowering the risk of disease. Untreated H.Ā pylori infection may progress into peptic ulcer disease or stomach cancer.
Ā H. Pylori Symptoms
- bloating and burpingĀ
- no appetite
- nausea and vomiting
- unexplained weight lossĀ
Be a Poop Observer
If your bowel movements look dark, black, tarry, or have blood in it, call your doctor. There are several medical tests to test for H. pylori, including:
- Stool antigen tests – the most common test for finding H. pylori by detecting proteins (antigens) in bowel movement.Ā
- Stool PCR test – (polymerase chain reaction test) looks for mutations that can make H. pylori antibiotic-resistant.Ā
- Urea breath test – measures the carbon dioxide in the breath for H. pylori
Foods to Discourage H. Pylori
Bananas help to stunt the growth of bacteria and coat the intestinal tract from stomach acid. Purple and red-colored foods such as berries, fruit, and garlic can be beneficial to provide relief from indigestion. Eating a clove of garlic daily may help to kill bacteria in the digestive tract.Ā Foods to avoid with H. pyloriĀ include spicy or greasy foods, caffeine, or dairy.Ā H. pyloriĀ diets should include foods that reduce inflammation, such as berries, broccoli, and green tea.
