Did you know that 10-30% of the global population suffers from seasonal allergies such coughing, sneezing, hay fever, allergic rhinitis? You can add Reflexology to your medicine cabinet. Reflexology can help to relieve allergies symptoms with the touch of the fingers and thumbs in minutes.
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 19.2 million adults and 5.2 million children have been diagnosed with hay fever in the past 12 months, about 7.7% of adults and 7.7% of children in the United States.
Seasonal allergies can trigger an allergic reaction in the respiratory system and sinuses, leading to inflammation and various symptoms. Here is how it can happen:
- Exposure to allergens: Seasonal allergies are triggered by exposure to airborne allergens such as pollen, mold spores, and dust mites. When people with allergies breathe in these allergens, their immune system may mistake them for harmful substances and mount an immune response.
- Release of histamine: In response to the allergen, the body releases a chemical called histamine, which triggers inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses. This inflammation can cause the lining of the nose and sinuses to become swollen, leading to symptoms such as congestion, runny nose, and postnasal drip.
- Constriction of airways: Histamine can also cause the muscles around the airways to contract, making breathing difficult and causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
- Increased mucus production: Besides inflammation and airway constriction, seasonal allergies can stimulate mucus production in the sinuses and airways. This excess mucus can further exacerbate congestion and make breathing difficult.
How Pollen Affects Your Digestive System
Pollen typically does not directly affect the digestive system, as it is primarily associated with allergies and respiratory symptoms. However, in some cases, people allergic to pollen may experience digestive symptoms due to their allergy.
People experience oral allergy syndrome, itching or swelling of the lips, mouth, or throat, caused by fruits, vegetables, and nuts that contain a protein similar to pollen. The body’s immune system mistakenly identifies them as pollen and triggers an allergic reaction.
Some ways to protect yourself from seasonal allergies:
- Avoid allergens: The best way to prevent allergy symptoms is to avoid exposure to the allergen as much as possible by staying indoors during peak pollen times, using air conditioning instead of opening windows, and avoiding outdoor activities like gardening or hiking during high pollen days.
- Wear protective gear: If you must be outside during allergy season, wear protective equipment such as a face mask, hat, and sunglasses to limit your exposure to allergens.
- Keep your home clean: Regularly clean your home to remove dust, mold, and other allergens. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, and wash bedding and curtains in hot water.
- Use air purifiers: Consider using an air purifier with a HEPA filter to remove allergens from the air in your home.
- Take allergy medications: Over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal corticosteroids can help alleviate allergy symptoms. Talk to your doctor before starting any new medication.
- Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, can be a long-term solution for seasonal allergies. This treatment involves gradually exposing the patient to small doses of the allergen over time, which can desensitize their immune system and reduce their sensitivity to the allergen.
- Alternative Healing Therapy, such as Reflexology that can reset your body’s natural response to better fight off invasive allergens.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears to promote relaxation and healing throughout the body. Reflexology techniques can help to alleviate allergy symptoms by stimulating the immune system and improving lymphatic circulation. Applying pressure to specific points on the feet or hands that correspond to the sinuses or lymphatic system may help reduce inflammation and congestion in these areas.
