What is Dry Eye?
As we age, tear production decreases. Some medical conditions, such as Sjogren’s syndrome, allergic eye disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, thyroid disorders, or vitamin A, can cause tear production to cease.
Symptoms of Dry Eyes
- Eyes feel gritty, or something feels like it is in it.
- Itchy, redness, blurry vision
- Light sensitivity
Causes for Dry Eyes:
- Environmental Factors: Dryness can be caused by exposure to dry air, wind, smoke, or pollution. Spending time in air-conditioned or heated environments can reduce humidity and contribute to dry eyes.
- Screen Time: Prolonged use of computers, smartphones, or other digital devices can reduce blinking frequency, leading to dryness and discomfort.
- Aging: Tear production can decrease as people age, leading to dry eyes, which are particularly common in older adults.
- Medications: Dry eyes can be a side effect of certain medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, and some blood pressure drugs.
- Medical Conditions: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, and thyroid disorders can affect tear production and lead to dry eyes.
- Contact Lenses: Wearing contact lenses can sometimes cause or exacerbate dry eye symptoms, especially if they are not fitted correctly or are worn for extended periods.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes, such as those occurring during menopause, can affect tear production and lead to dry eyes.
- Eye Surgery: Certain eye surgeries, such as LASIK, can temporarily or permanently affect tear production.
- Vitamin A Deficiency: Vitamin A is essential for maintaining healthy eyes. A deficiency can lead to dryness and other vision problems.
Increase Tear Production
- Use warm compresses and wash eyelids and lashes.
- Use commercial artificial tears as necessary.
- Blink your eyes more frequently.
- Add essential fatty acids, vitamins A, B12, and D, to your diet.
- Reduce alcohol consumption
- Reduce or stop smoking and keep away from smoke.
- Sleep more – Too many people don’t get enough sleep.
- Drink more water (half your weight in ounces.)
Hand Reflexology Tip to Relieve Dry Eyes
Reflexology is a science and an art. Reflex points on the feet, hands, and ears represent the body in miniature. The nerve pathways in each foot create an electrochemical flow that communicates with the entire nervous system. The principle of reflexology is that reflex points and areas, meridian pathways, and chakra regions connect with a specific organ, gland, or body part. Through the application of pressure using specific thumb and finger techniques, reflexology works with the peripheral nervous system and encourages the body to relax. Reflexology promotes the reduction of stress, reinforcing the body’s ability to stay healthy and vital. This preventative modality encourages wellness through empowerment, education, relaxation, and homeostasis of body functions.
