Do you know how your thyroid functions? And why you need foot Reflexology to support thyroid health!
Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland situated at the base of the front of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple. Hormones produced by the thyroid glandĀ have an enormous impact on your health, affecting all aspects of your metabolism. The thyroid controls your metabolism with a few specific hormones ā T4 (thyroxine, contains four iodide atoms) and T3 (triiodothyronine, contains three iodide atoms). These two hormones are created by the thyroid and they tell the bodyās cells how much energy to use. When your thyroid works properly, it will maintain the right amount of hormones to keep your metabolism working at the right rate.Ā
Types of Thyroid Diseases
Your thyroid creates and produces hormones that play a role in many different systems throughout your body. When your thyroid makes either too much or too little of these important hormones, itās called a thyroid disease. There are several different types of thyroid disease, including hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis and Hashimotoās thyroiditis.
Symptoms of thyroid disease can be divided into two groups ā those related to having too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) and those related to having too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism).
Symptoms of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can include:
- Experiencing anxiety, irritability and nervousness.
- Having trouble sleeping.
- Losing weight.
- Having an enlarged thyroid gland
- Having muscle weakness and tremors.
- Experiencing irregular menstrual periods or having your menstrual cycle stop.
- Feeling sensitive to heat.
- Having vision problems or eye irritation.
Symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can include:
- Feeling tired (fatigue).
- Gaining weight.
- Experiencing forgetfulness.
- Having frequent and heavy menstrual periods.
- Having dry and coarse hair.
- Having a hoarse voice.
- Experiencing an intolerance to cold temperatures.
Reflexology Can Support Healthy Thyroid Functions
Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears. It is based on the principle that these points correspond to different organs and systems in the body, and stimulating them can promote healing and overall well-being. While reflexology is not a substitute for medical treatment, some believe that it can support thyroid function in the following ways:
- Improved circulation: Reflexology techniques by applying light pressure on the reflex points on the feet and hands can help improve blood circulation, oxygen, and nutrient to the thyroid gland.
- Stress reduction: Reflexology is known to promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. Chronic stress can negatively impact thyroid function by disrupting hormone production and regulation. By helping to relieve stress, reflexology may indirectly support thyroid health.
- Balancing the endocrine system: Reflexology can help balance the body’s endocrine system, which includes the pineal, pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, kidneys, adrenals, and reproductive glands.Ā
- Energy flow and blockage release: According to reflexology principles, energy flows through all energetic pathways in the body. Reflexology can relieve energy blockages and promotes healthy energy to support all body functions.
Disclaimer: Reflexology should not be used solely for thyroid disorders; please consult a healthcare professional for appropriate medical management. Reflexology can be a complementary approach to conventional medical treatments.
