How Many People Suffer From Migraine Headaches?
Migraine is a prevalent neurological disease affecting 39 million US men, women, and children and 1 billion worldwide. Everyone knows someone who suffers from migraine.
A migraine can cause unrelenting and pulsating pain, usually on one side of the head. Many times, the migraine is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sounds. Migraine attacks can last for hours to days or months. The pain can be so severe that it can interfere with daily activities.
7 Types of Migraines Headaches
Below are brief migraine descriptions. Pain duration is an estimate per category. Please research for more information.
Migraine with an aura:Ā The main symptoms are visual disturbances before a migraine begins, followed by common symptoms. The duration is a few minutes to 4 hours or longer.
Migraine without an aura:Ā This is a common migraine. Main symptoms include throbbing pain that starts on one side of the head. Moving around tends to make the pain worse, and it’s normal to feel nauseous, dizzy, and sensitive to light and sound. The duration is about 4-72 hours.
Menstrual Migraine:Ā Ā 7-19% of women are affected with menstrual Migraine, which coincides with a menstrual cycle with fluctuating hormone levels. Migraines can happen with or without an aura. The duration is 4-72 or longer hours.
Abdominal Migraine: Instead of having a headache, the Migraine causes abdominal pain because the Migraine begins in the stomach. It is more common with children than adults, though 2/3 of children will develop migraine headaches as adolescents. The duration is 1-72 hours.
Vestibular Migraine: 30-50% of Migraine suffers suffer from vestibular Migraine. Symptoms include vertigo, dizziness, and trouble with balance. The duration is from seconds to days.
Migraine without headache: You might get an aura but not the actual headache, sometimes known as a “silent migraine.”
Status MigrainosusĀ – a migraine with or without an aura, lasting more than 72 hours. This type of headache might briefly respond to medication, then flood back with twice the pain after a break. This is the most difficult Migraine to control.

Continue gently massaging across the face until you work down to the chin and jawline.
