You might be thinking, why should I care about my vitamin D level for the upcoming months? I am outside all the time now in the warm months.  Reflexology Can Support Good Health.

you need enough vitamin D to help keep your bones and teeth strong and absorb the necessary calcium and phosphorus. Remember those sailors from decades ago who would sail for months and found themselves with brittle bones caused by vitamin D deficiency, known as Rickets? Vitamin D is also known as the “sunshine vitamin.”

Maintaining adequate vitamin D supports overall health, including normal brain and nervous system function, normal muscle function, immune health, and a healthy nervous system that helps coordinate the body’s functions.

How Much Natural Sunlight Do You need to Get Adequate Vitamin D?

Vitamin D production requires UVB radiation. UVB radiation is one type of ultraviolet light that comes from the sun. This part of sunlight triggers the skin to make vitamin D by starting a chemical reaction that begins the production of vitamin D3. Your liver and kidneys process vitamin D into forms your body can use.  It was once thought that daily sun exposure was enough for Vitamin D absorption; unfortunately, this isn’t true. Sun exposure depends on its latitude, season, time of day, skin pigmentation, age, clothing, cloud cover, and sunscreen use. As fall rolls into winter, UVB exposure decreases on sunny days, and vitamin D production drops further.

How to boost Vitamin D for the Winter Months

Nowadays, many of us have jobs that don’t allow us to get outside much during the day. You can get the recommended amount of vitamin D through food and/or supplements.

Foods that provide vitamin D

  • Fatty fish — salmon, trout, sardines, tuna, and mackerel are among the best natural sources.
  • Egg yolks — contain some vitamin D
  • Fortified milk — many cow’s-milk products.
  • Fortified breakfast cereals — check the Nutrition Facts label because amounts vary.
  • Fortified plant milks — such as soy, almond, oat, and other alternatives. Check labels.
  • UV-exposed mushrooms — some mushrooms are treated with ultraviolet light and can provide significant vitamin D.
  • Fortified orange juice — some brands add vitamin D.

Can Reflexology Help Maintain Healthy Vitamin D Levels?

Reflexology does not directly increase or maintain vitamin D levels, but it can support a healthy self-care routine. Reflexology can complement healthy habits by encouraging relaxation, reducing everyday stress, and helping you become more mindful of your body’s needs.

Got Questions about Reflexology and Vitamin D?

If you have questions about your vitamin D levels, talk to your healthcare provider. As wonderful as Reflexology is, it is not a replacement for traditional medical care.
