Use Mindfulness to Relieve Anxiety

Mindfulness might not be the solution for everyone. Research has found that when you are able to create a little space between yourself and what you’re experiencing, your anxiety can soften. Beware. If you get too used to that underlying feeling of stress, it can gradually grow, creating a habit of stress.

It has been proven that stress can be detrimental to your health and well-being. Consequently, when we get caught up in cycles of reacting versus being active, we can create more distress in our lives. Therefore, being mindful and aware and responding with mindfulness is paramount.  The following three tips are useful for understanding HOW to use mindfulness to calm anxiety.

Use Mindfulness to Calm Your Anxious Feelings:

Being mindful of your difficult feelings without analyzing, suppressing, or encouraging them – is helpful. When you allow yourself to feel and acknowledge your worries, irritations, painful memories, and other difficult thoughts and emotions, this often helps your mind to work through and resolve them.

Being mindful will help you safely explore the underlying causes of your stress and anxiety. When you allow yourself to just go along with what’s happening rather than expending energy fighting or turning away from it, you will create the opportunity to gain insight into what’s driving your concerns.

Create Space with Mindfulness

Being Mindful helps to create space around worries so they don’t become overwhelming. When you begin to understand the underlying causes of your apprehension, freedom and a sense of spaciousness naturally emerge.

“Practicing mindfulness is a process of learning to trust and stay with feelings of discomfort rather than trying to escape from or analyze them,” says Bob Stahl, Ph.D., Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher, founder of multiple MBSR programs, and co-author of multiple books on MBSR.
